Advice

Optional, additional text added to an Observation that further defines the prewritten response. It can be used in a multitude of ways (not just for Advice). The student does not see a label of "Advice" next to text created in the Advice area of an Observation.

All Raw Table

This table represents a flat file of all the data in the downloaded database. The other tables represent an atomized version of this data. The AllRawTable is created when you open the database with WpOutcomes.

Assignment

A Waypoint interactive rubric. That is, one or more Elements designed to evaluate student work. An Assignment includes one or more Elements, the % weighting for included Elements, and the prompt (Assignment description) given to students.

Competency

A higher level skill used to organize and categorize Elements. Competencies can be customized for Site License holders.

Element

A criteria used to evaluate work.

Evaluate

The Evaluate page is the heart of Waypoint. Reviewers (whether they are teachers, TAs, other students, or the author themselves) use Evaluate to create detailed feedback for the author.

History Button

Click the history button ( http://waypointoutcomes.com/screenshots/images/icons/icon_history.gif ) available for each Element on the Evaluate page to see a history of comments given to the currently selected Student for a particular Competency.

  • Comments created by the current user are denoted by that user's initials.
  • Comments created by peer reviewers include the peer reviewer's name.
  • Comments created by another instructor are denoted by "other instructor."

The comments are displayed in reverse chronological order.

HTML Editor

This allows for the evaluator to add format to feedback text during the Evaluate process. Formatting includes adding boldface, italics, coloring, font size, etc. By default, feedback is given using plaintext which lacks any format to the text.

Using this editor allows text to be pasted in from Microsoft Word, or any other word processing program, without losing any text format.

Make All Raw Table

This query resides in the Access database that local Waypoint administrators can download.

The query runs when you open a database with WpOutcomes and creates the AllRawTable table - a flat file of the crucial fields in the database.

Running the query manually simply replaces the table.

MyList

Waypoint uses the idea of a MyList to help organize Assignments, Students, and Reviewers. A MyList is simply an edited version of all available Assignments, Students, or Reviewers.

Observation

A specific response, written in advance, for a particular Element.

Overall Comments

The Overall Comments area appears at the bottom of the Evaluate page. It is optional - students will not notice the lack of comments on their feedback.

Overall Comments appear at the top of the feedback a student receives via hard copy, e-mail, or return to an online gradebook.

Projects

A Waypoint Project connects a list of students, a specific Assignment, and a list of reviewers, typically for peer review. In the case of peer review, the list of students is typically identical to the list of reviewers.

Some clients have an additional Project setting, and can create end of course surveys. If you do not have this option (visible after selecting Projects from the main menu, then clicking New and having two options in the resulting drop-down box), contact your local Waypoint administrator. Your local Waypoint administrator is listed on the page you see after first logging in to Waypoint. If no one from your institution is listed there, please feel free to contact us directly.

Reference

Optional, additional text added to an Observation to further define the prewritten response. Intended for additional reading or a citation, the Reference text can be used in many different ways since text created here is not labeled "Reference."

Reviewers

Names of students (or tutors, TAs etc.) who will review other students' work.

Score

Waypoint automatically calculates a score, based on choices made on the Evaluate page. This score is not visible to students (unless they use Waypoint for peer review or self-assessment). The score is set to a client-specific scale and is only intended as a general guide to the instructor-determined grade.

Students

Names of students to be evaluated using Waypoint. Students can log in to Waypoint to see only evaluations.

Team

A Waypoint team gives specific teachers the ability to share their Assignments with other faculty at their institution. A shared Assignment can be used as-is by other faculty, but cannot be modified.

WebCT

WebCT was an e-learning platform developed in the late 1990s at the University of British Columbia.

It was purchased by Blackboard in February of 2006.

The term 'WebCT' is still used by many institutions. The official name of the current versions of WebCT is Blackboard Vista and Blackboard CE6/8.

Waypoint integrates with both Blackboard Vista and Blackboard CE6/8 through a PowerLink; earlier versions of WebCT (version 4.x or earlier) may work with Waypoint, but institutions should contact us for specifics.

WpAssessment

A WpAssessment is the activity created in Moodle to:

  1. Collect student work electronically via attached documents.
  2. Access Waypoint for both instructors and (potentially) students.
  3. To return feedback and a numeric grade from Waypoint to the Moodle Gradebook.
